On December 29 my family and I headed down to Williamsburg for a mini 2.5 day trip. We went down for a little R&R and to get away from the stress in our lives (which also turned into an internet free vacation because we couldn't get cell service at our cabin).
We have always loved Williamsburg. My sister and mom went to college at William and Mary. My parents spent their honeymoon down there. and during most of my childhood we would go down for a little weekend during the Columbus day break. It's always nice to go back because you know what you want to do but you can also find new things. This year we planned our trip around places we wanted to eat and also going to the outlets.
On Monday we go down there around early afternoon, checked into our cabin, and then headed out to visit Yankee Candle Village. My mom and I have a love for candles so we love going there because all we have at home is the outlet. I restrained myself and only bought 4 easy wax melts (I mean they were only $2.50 each when they are normally $5!).
Then we went back to the cabin and changed to head to Kings Arms Tavern for dinner. The tavern have the best food and its authentic to colonial times which makes it even better. There was a fire going with a person playing the violin in the waiting room. And while we were having dinner (I had the tavern dinner, Dad had the prime rib, and Mom/Sister had the game pot pie) there we people coming in playing music and telling stories.
On Tuesday we spent the morning at the outlets. We went to Pepperidge Farm, Bath & Body Works, and of course Harry & Davids.
Then we headed back to the cabin to change for Christiana Campbell's Tavern Holiday Tea. We had never been to this before and it was a great experience. During this Tea you had samples of many traditional holiday tea appitizers and you learned about different colonial traditions including dances (Does anyone remember learning the Virginia Real when they were in Elementary school?), songs, and stories.
After we were done there we changed into warmer comfier clothes and walked around the 'burg looking a the holiday decorations and getting hot apple cider. We even went up to the Virginia Peanut Shop but all the samples were gone by then.
On Wednesday we packed up all our things and headed into the 'burg one last minute things which was of course mainly food related. We had to get our sandwiches from The Cheese Shop (if you ever go there just get their bread ends and house dressing it is amazing!) and the College Deli (try their Hot Holly or their Smithfield sandwiches, they are great!).
But sadly we had to head back home after that to get ready for Family coming over the next day to celebrate the new year.
Did any of you go anywhere around Christmas time?
Fun fact: In Colonial Williamsburg their Christmas period is the 12 days of Christmas which means that they celebrate from the day after Christmas Day to Epiphany.
